Conscious Overseas Migration: A Pathway to Alignment, Strategy, and Stability
Moving abroad is more than just a logistical decision; it represents a significant life transition for expats that can bring excitement, uncertainty, grief, and possibility all at once.
The COMPASS Program is a unique life coaching experience tailored to support individuals who are leaving the United States to start anew in another country. It delves into both the emotional aspects of this transition and the practical preparations necessary for building a fulfilling life abroad.
Through guided reflection, structured discussions, and practical planning tools, participants gain clarity about their motivations for moving, address fears and perceived barriers, and develop greater confidence in navigating the changes that come with international relocation.
The program encourages participants to approach the moving process with intention and awareness, enabling them to create a life abroad that feels aligned, stable, and sustainable.

My name is Shawn Luther, and I am a life coach who specializes in helping people, especially expats, navigate significant life transitions, including the decision to move abroad from the United States.
Relocating to another country often involves much more than preparing documents, housing, or finances. It can raise deeper questions about identity, belonging, safety, and the desire to live in closer alignment with one’s values. At the same time, leaving the United States and familiar environments can bring uncertainty and emotional complexity.
My work focuses on helping individuals navigate both the internal experience of change and the practical preparation required to build a stable life abroad.
My trauma-informed approach includes evidence-based tools and reflective frameworks that support emotional resilience, thoughtful decision-making, and personal clarity. Rather than prescribing solutions, I help clients explore their motivations, identify perceived barriers, and move forward with greater awareness and intention.
The COMPASS Program grew out of my own experience researching and preparing for an international move, a process that is still ongoing. Along the way, I found that preparing for relocation involves not only practical planning but also acknowledging grief, uncertainty, and the emotional realities of change, all of which are vital when moving abroad.
In 2024, I attended a retreat center in Costa Rica as part of my journey of moving abroad. What was intended to be a two-month stay turned into nine months after I suddenly lost vision and required two emergency surgeries to repair a detached retina. Alone in a foreign country, immersed in a language I didn’t speak, I quickly had to shift my mindset from victim to adventurer.
I took advantage of my time in Costa Rica, often surrounded by fellow expats and locals who didn’t speak English. I had many conversations using Google Translate and learned basic conversational skills. Meanwhile, I sought to connect with others — both expats and native Costa Ricans — and developed my own community for friendship and support.
That experience strengthened my belief that adapting to life in another country requires resilience, curiosity, and a willingness to build connections in unfamiliar environments. Most importantly, I knew it was possible.
I will soon be launching the COMPASS Program, a life coaching experience designed to support people preparing for leaving the United States to start a new chapter abroad. Additional resources — including the ROAM Guide — help people understand the practical systems and considerations involved in building a life in a new country.
If you are considering a move abroad, my goal is to help you approach that transition with clarity, preparation, and a strong sense of direction. Enter your email address above to receive updates about the COMPASS Program.
